SMARTY – Smart Tyre Development Project

   Few weeks ago, in the October of 2015., We had great honour to present Our project  about development of smart/intelligent tyre,  ‚‚ SMARTY‚‚ in Qingdao,China, during the CIRI Expo.   (China International Rubber Industry Expo). Reason why We choose to present Our project in Asia is because of Asian tyre and rubber industry development trend and because CIRI Expo is very attractive expo and conference for tyre and rubber industry, organized in Qingdao. (city of tyres)

TYRE INDUSTRY / History highlights
  Understanding of history of  tyre and rubber industry is very important for future development and inovations. In the past (history) we had several exemples how inovations can bring big changes in tyre industry and on global tyre market.  ( Bias – Radial tyres )
  That possibility for changes on global tyre market is one of reason why we are working on development of smart/intelligent tyres, as we expect that Smart/Intelligent tyres will become next breakthrough  in tyre industry.

  Timeline of the key points in the history of tyres:
?    1840’s: Charles Goodyear invents vulcanised rubber and Robert William Thomson patents the vulcanised rubber pneumatic tyre 
?    1880’s: John Dunlop invents pneumatic  tyres for bicycles.
?    1890’s: Andre Michelin uses pneumatic tyres on an automobile.
?    1948: Michelin patents the radial tyre 
?  1980’s : TPMS adopted by the European market as an optional feature for luxury passenger vehicles 
?   2000’s : Intelligent tyre project development

INTELLIGENT / SMART TYRE CONCEPT

  Because different tyre producers has different definition it is hard to find correct definition . We can say that Intelligent/smart tyres are tyres produced using  standard tyre production technology, new materials  and ICT technology (sensors,software,hardware…) 
  Tyres   produced in combination with NEW ``alternative`` MATERIALS  also can be define as SMART tyres  ( because of their impact to environment, safety, durability)
  For better understanding of intelligent tyres, we can examine  some projects of Michelin , Goodyear , Bridgestone, Hankook, Continental, Pirelli, Apollo, Hyundai, SIT ( they are combination of new materials and ICT technology) .
Michelin :  Tweel - is an airless tire design concept developed by the French tire company Michelin.  Its significant advantage over pneumatic tires is that the Tweel does not  use a bladder full of compressed air,  and therefore it cannot burst, leak pressure, or become flat.  Michelin X Tweel Airless Radial Tire - first commercialized airless radial solution. Michelin open first TWEEL plant in 2014. in North America 
Goodyear :  Goodyear is working on several projects and some of them are ,  AMT – air maintance technology (system automatically keeps tires                                                                                                  inflated to the optimum pressure without    the need for any external pumps or electronics) ,                                                                                                   another one is   INTELLIGENT  TYRE  (A tyre with an embedded microchip linked to the car’s  on-board computer) and BH03  and TRIPLE TUBE  Concept tyres.

Hankook / Bridgestone :  both of them are working on air free , non pneumatic tyres, and Bridgestone is also working on real  Intelligent Tyre  - they use  the Contact Area Information Sensing technology (CAIS) 


Continental :  works on Continental In-Tire Sensors  (Future Continental tire pressure sensors read also tread depth. If the tread is run down to below a tire-specific threshold value,                                                                                       the on-board electrical system signals that a tire change is due.)
Pirelli :   Cyber Tyre - features  embedded sensors  and is designed to provide vital information about vehicle performance and road conditions.   The idea is that this data is then conveyed  to the driver as well as to the car’s electronics, helping improve safety and efficiency.
SMARTY – Smart Tyre Development Project
  We  started development of SMARTY project in 2015.year.  Idea is to develop smart tyres that will bring revolution in tyre industry and to automotive industry, but not ‘’ordinary’’ smart tyres, Our project is working on development of smart tyres that can predict failure in tyre before it happens .
  Reasons why we started this project are Safety and Economy reasons. Also we think it can be next breakthrough in tyre industry.  
Tyre safety is an integral – yet often overlooked - component of overall driving safety. Taking the right precautions  will save You money, worry, and most importantly, keep You and others safe.
  Economy reasons   are  Less Downtime – (Smarty as solution) and Competitive price per mile ,   The most common causes of downtime are related to mechanical problems, such as engine or transmission problems, or tyres. Downtime costs are important factors in running a fleet. 
? How will  ``SMARTY`` solve  that  problems ?
 * One device – several functions 
? TPMS  (in Smarty device) - will  help drivers to solve problems   with underinflated tyres.                                                   (Underinflation is  the leading cause of tyre failure)
? FAILURE PREDICTION  - will help drivers to reduce  vehicle downtime.                                                                              (prediction of tyre failure before it happen )      *heart of the system                                                                                                                                          *pothole and sidewall impact  solution                         
? V2V -  will inform other drivers about road condition  and potential dangers  for  tyres and vehicle.      *prevention of potholes
? *Tread depth system --- inform driver on time for tyre change  ( + offers)
? System Configuration         ---     * (Failure prediction) 
? Sensors – vibration, (material strain)                                                                                                                                 ( (different  pattern for  different conditions of tyre and different road surface )      
? Hardware (vehicle / server) – inform driver (graphic) about potential failure ( %) in near future , and also can redirect driver to nearest service center to fix tyre failure. 
? Software  - ``bridge `` between sensors / signal and hardware 
? V2V -    V2V indicates the assistance system to inform                                                                                                                                                                        the road condition, an intersection, a curved road,                                                                                                               a lane change, the collision avoidance as well as                                                                                                                              the possible dangerous driving situations to the driver.   


Summary  :  
THE  TYRE / RUBBER INDUSTRY IS LOOKING FOR NEXT BREAKTHROUGH IN TECHNICAL INNOVATION. INTELLIGENT TYRES  COULD BE  DEVELOPED AND COMMERCIALIZED IN NEAR FUTURE.  INVENTORS OF INTELLIGENT TYRES  / CAN  BECOME MAJOR TYRE PLAYER  AFTER THAT.  DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ``SMARTY`` AND OTHER INTELLIGENT TYRE PROJECTS :  ``SMARTY``  IS WORKING ON PREDICTION OF TYRE FAILURE AND CAN BE USED AS TECHNOLOGY OR  AS A SERVICE.
